Wicked Cheap Wine Night

The chilly rain of winter and the cool weather of Northern California continue to dominate our lives here in the City and beyond.  For those strong willed folks who love to take on the harsh climate, whether it be skiing and snowboarding in the mountains or riding huge waves in the ocean, this is your month.  But for those that prefer to stay inside treasuring a cup of hot cocoa or indulging in meaty stews with root vegetables and wintry greens, then February at Maverick is perfect for you.  Here is the latest from 17th and Mission.

Maverick will be celebrating everyone’s favorite Hallmark holiday in style once again – and not just the once because were doing it twice this year!  St. Valentine’s Dinner will be extended to two days this year due to last year’s incredible response.  It may not come as a shock to all you last-minute types that we are completely booked on Thursday February 14, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late.  There are still a handful of both seats and time slots available on Wednesday February 13, so don’t delay.  We will be serving a Four-Course Tasting Menu both nights for $50 per person or $80 with wine pairings.  An exquisite array of culinary delights and fantastic wines will ensure good times for all.  Please call and make your reservation as soon as possible as we are expecting a full house each night.

On to the regular Round Up calendar where our Wicked Cheap wine night swaggers its way on down the hallowed every-Monday path once again this month.  This is always a very popular night for us (hmmm, wonder why?), so make your reservations early as everyone takes full advantage of 40% off every bottle of wine.  Also, One of A Kind Wine Wednesday makes its 2008 debut this coming February 20.  Syrah will be celebrated in all its glory as Mike takes us up and down the coast to taste some special wines. Rest assured, this Syrah tasting will be quite different than a previous One of Kind as this time we’ll be tasting two from California and a beauty from Washington.  Along with the generous pours, all guests receive a perfect food pairing from our gifted kitchen staff. There are still seats available for this event, but make your plans soon. For more details on this hour-long seminar check out Mike’s Cellar below.

In other happenings in and around Maverick, Out of the Kitchen (OTK) continues to impress.  Scott and Stacy are working diligently on the next issue and it promises to be a gem. We have some folks already subscribed and we are still working on finding more locations to distribute this one-of-a-kind publication.  We need everyone’s support so we can continue to make this project a success.  The OTK crew has also put together a blog that will keep everyone up to date as well as provide a destination for readers to contribute their feedback online.  The site is simple and fun and just a click away.  Check us out on the web at www.otksf.com.

And don’t forget – while the holidays may be long gone you shouldn’t need an excuse to buy Youk’s Hot Sauce.  Honestly, quit being so generous and treat yourself for once to a bottle of your own.  Just think of all those weekends that you didn’t plan ahead and make reservations for Brunch at Maverick and you were left at home scrambling eggs and frying potatoes without Youk’s Hot Sauce to spice everything up.  Well then the time has come to take a little Maverick home with you.  Stop by anytime (Scott is here in the mornings too) to purchase this legendary sauce.  Oh yeah, and with Opening Day and the baseball season just around the corner, Scott is running a special price on Autographed Bottles.  Buy one for your favorite Red Sox fanatic for just $25!

So sure, February may be short on days but they aren’t short on fun.  Our regular menu continues to evolve every week and our wine list shines with gorgeous wines from all over the U.S and Europe.  As usual, reservations can be made online or by calling us anytime. Come in from out of the cold and spend an evening with us. We look forward to serving you soon.

Looking for a great Valentines, birthday, or anniversary gift for that special oenophile in your life? A private 'One of a Kind' wine Seminar with Mike at Maverick is just the ticket. You choose the theme and pick an evening.  These private seminars can be held on a Wednesday, when we don't have a  seminar already scheduled, as well as Tuesdays and Sundays in the early evening. As with our regularly scheduled “One of a Kind” seminars, the price will be $35 (before tax and gratuity), the start-time will be at 5:30PM, and each seminar will include three dishes from the kitchen prepared specially to match with the wines.  Call Maverick or e-mail Mike at mike@sfmaverick.com for more details or to set up a private seminar.

We’re more than a little excited to ramp up this years “One of a Kind Wine Wednesday’s” with the first seminar of 2008 scheduled for this February 20th. “Que Sera Sera:  The Syrah Taste Test” will focus on California and Washington Syrah. See information below. Click on the link below to see the full Winter/Spring 2008 schedule. http://http://sfmaverick.com/promotion.asp

Syrah is presently one of the most widely planted grapes in the western United States. It is planted in a myriad of soils and growing areas with drastically different climates. Amongst wine writers and professionals, there is much debate as to where it grows best. We will continue and add to this discussion by tasting three very distinctive Syrah: two from California and one Washington. These heavier wines will be paired with three hearty dishes from the kitchen.

This month look for more classic French white wines from the stellar 2005 vintage.  I am particularly excited to present the Domaine Andre 2005 Arbois Chardonnay from the western Jura region and a Demi-sec  Olivier Deletang 2005 Chenin Blanc from the Montlouis region of the Loire. Both have unique flavor profiles not currently represented on our list and will be in early next week just in time to celebrate the infamous 'Love Week.'

I can’t wait to see you all at Maverick to celebrate life and talk about my favorite subject - Wine. Just in case you all were wondering.

-Mike
